Today more than ever, a number of dental professionals offer treatment of periodontal disease and placement of dental implants, including some dentists, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and endodontists. So you may ask, “why is my dentist sending me to see a periodontist?”
A periodontist is a dentist who has received 3 additional years of training after dental school and specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists are experts in the treatment of oral inflammation and often treat moderate-to-severe gum disease or patients with a complex medical history. An Emphasis on Maintenance
Maintenance is the period after active periodontal therapy. Our emphasis on maintenance means that we will continue to work with you to ensure that your gums and bone stay healthy. Typically, this means coming to our office for a periodontal maintenance appointment every 3 months. Sometimes, we share these visits with your general dentist, so you alternate seeing your general dentist and our team every 3 months. Research has shown that maintenance is the most important phase of periodontal treatment, so we will work with you to ensure that we continue to monitor and improve your oral health.
